My Story — Your Brisbane Pool Safety Certificate Specialist
Pool safety isn't just my job. It's personal — I nearly didn't make it past two years old.
Every backyard I walk into, every gate I shake, every latch I jiggle — there's a two-year-old version of me somewhere in the back of my mind. This page is the long way round of explaining why I take this work so personally. 🛟
I'm not someone who fell into pool inspecting because it sounded like a tidy little business. I'm here because I very nearly didn't make it past my second birthday — and a faulty pool gate was the reason. That's not a sales pitch. That's just the truth of how I ended up doing this for a living.
So when I'm crouched down checking your latch height, or pointing out a gap in your fence you've walked past a thousand times, I'm not being fussy for the sake of it. I'm seeing the version of your kids — or your grandkids, or the neighbour's curious toddler — that I used to be. And I'd really, really like them to grow up too.

Why this work matters to me

I was born in 1979 in South Africa — and honestly, it was much the same story right across the world back then. Pools everywhere, barely a fence in sight, and "she'll be right" (or whatever the local version of it was) pretty much summed up the parenting mood. Sadly, far too many young kids drowned in backyard pools back then, all over the world. The pool safety laws we have in Queensland today exist in part because of those losses. Real families. Real kids. Real heartbreak that someone, eventually, decided we shouldn't keep accepting.
When I was two years old, I came within a whisker of being one of those kids.
I was at home with a young babysitter. She ducked into the pool area to talk to a neighbour, who happened to be a close friend, over the boundary fence, the way you do. I was out in the backyard playing. When she headed back inside the house, the pool gate sadly did not fully latch behind her as it was faulty — it never quite caught. A little while later, I toddled off, saw the unlatched pool gate, pushed the gate open, made a beeline for the water like little kids always do, and went straight in head first.
Minutes later, the babysitter found me floating face down.
I'm told she screamed the street awake. A neighbour came running — and by some genuinely lucky miracle, that neighbour happened to be a doctor. He fished me out, started CPR right there on the concrete, and kept me going until the ambulance arrived. My parents were both at work. By the time they got the call, the worst of it was already over. I was blue, then I was breathing, then I was in hospital — and somehow, I was still here.
It took a matter of minutes.
I don't remember a single second of it. I was too small. But the story has lived in our family for forty-odd years, and somewhere along the way it quietly became part of me.
So no — I never grew up dreaming of being a pool safety inspector. There was no big lightbulb moment. After more than twenty years in the corporate world, I just hit a point where I wanted my work to actually mean something. Not just pay the bills, but have some quiet purpose. Pool safety was the obvious answer staring me in the face the whole time. It's one of the few jobs where doing it properly — really properly — might mean another family doesn't get the phone call mine almost did.
That's why I take my time. That's why I'll politely point out the gate that almost latches, even if it's annoying to hear. That's why I'd rather you pass on the second visit than scrape through on the first.
Because it really does only take the blink of an eye.

Setting the record straight
"Mate, isn't this whole thing just a money grab by the government?"
Look, I get it. Nobody loves being told they have to pay for an inspection — and every now and then someone (usually only half-joking) hits me with that exact line. So let's clear it up properly, because it actually matters.
I don't work for the government. I never have (well actually I did, when I was in the Air Force!). I'm a fully self-employed, QBCC licensed independent pool safety inspector — a small Brisbane business, run by one guy in a ute, doing every inspection himself.
goes to the government per inspection to lodge your Form 23 certificate.
independent — small local business, not a government department.
The rest of your fee covers the actual work — my time on site, insurance, the vehicle, the gear, the written report, lodging your certificate, and the second visit if your fence needs a tweak before it passes. It's not a fortune - it's nowhere near a "money grab" by anyone.
And the laws themselves? They're not red tape for the sake of red tape. They exist because Queensland kids were drowning in backyard pools at a rate we'd lost the stomach to keep accepting. The rules aren't perfect — no rules ever are — but they have, measurably, saved lives.
Doing something is better than doing nothing - in respect of legislation. Would we rather try to stop the next drowning, or sit back and hope it sorts itself out?
I know which side I'm on. That's why I do this.

Who is the REAL Pool Inspector G? 🤔
The Man Behind the Character

G'day — I'm Gavin, the bloke behind the cartoon! While Pool Inspector G is the fun-loving character you see on the website, the real me isn't too far off.
I'm a proud Brisbane local and the owner of Quayside Property Services Group — where I juggle management rights, property management, handyman work, AND pool inspections. Some people collect hobbies — I collect entire business divisions. 😅
I absolutely love the property industry — like, genuinely get excited about it. Most people's eyes glaze over when I start talking about body corporate bylaws or gate latch compliance. Mine light up. I'm basically a property nerd in a Hawaiian shirt. 🌺
Before pool inspecting, I spent years in corporate land as CEO for a number of large retailers and software organisations after making the move from South Africa to Australia. I'm also a qualified accountant — which basically means I traded spreadsheets for tape measures, and honestly, it was the best career pivot ever. Throw in avid home renovator and full-time avgeek, and you've got a bloke who swapped boardrooms for backyards and hasn't looked back. ✈️🔧
Outside of work — if you can even find me outside of work — you'll catch me exploring Brisbane, perfecting my barbecue game, or scrolling through property listings "for fun." My mates think I need a hobby that doesn't involve real estate. They're probably right, but I'm not listening. 🤙
